Canada Montgomery

Associate Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Canada is a 4th year MD/MSHP student planning to pursue a career in neurosurgery. She is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS in Biology and Neuroscience, minors in Chemistry and Gender/Sexuality/Women’s Studies, and a Philosophy of Science certificate in Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. Before starting medical school, she worked as a nursing assistant in the Neuro-ICU at UPMC Presby. During her time at Penn, Canada has been involved in community outreach initiatives including Cut Hypertension, a blood pressure screening program, and Covenant House, a shelter for at-risk youth. She has also taken part in a variety of diversity efforts primarily via her participation in the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Students Opposing Racism in Medicine (StORM), and Johnson Scholars Mentorship Program.

During a year out, Canada will be pursuing training in health services research as a David A. Asch Medical Student Scholar in the Master’s in Health Policy Research program. Given her interests in community engagement, health advocacy, and health/healthcare disparities, she hopes to utilize her MSHP degree to pursue clinical research endeavors pertaining to disparities and surgical outcomes with the ultimate goal of influencing medical policies to ensure equitable care for all. In her free time, Canada enjoys spending quality time with friends and family, watching football and reality TV, and kickboxing.
