Laura Burkbauer

Laura is a 4th year MD student pursuing a career in general surgery, with specific interests in surgical oncology and pediatric surgery. Originally from Greenville, SC, Laura studied psychology and history at Duke University. During medical school, Laura has served in leadership for the Diversity and Inclusion Student Advisory Committee, LGBTQ People in Medicine (now Penn Med Pride), and Center for Surgical Health. She recently completed a year out of clinical research with Dr. Julia Tchou in the Division of Endocrine and Oncology Surgery, with a focus on imaging and breast cancer outcomes. In the coming year, Laura is excited to complete dual certificate programs in Academic Surgery and Spirituality & Health, while continuing her ongoing research in surgical oncology. Outside of medicine, Laura enjoys reading, spending time with her wife and son, and cheering on the Blue Devils! She would be happy to talk to students about year-out research opportunities, diversity in surgery, and balancing a family with a career in medicine.
